Christian Siriano Spring 2014

To say shooting Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week/New York Fashion Week is exciting, would be a understatement. Any IMG credentialed photographer shooting MBFW would say it’s not only a privilege, but incredibly cool. Now being a IMG credentialed photographer is a great accomplishment, but being a house photographer is totally different. But with the perks of being the house photographer (main photographer), there also comes the responsibility and pressure you have to perform. Not only must you knock out perfect images, but the turnaround time to process these must be instant for press/catalog usage.

For the 3rd season in a row, I’ve had the privilege to shoot the Christian Siriano show as house photographer. For me this not only brings great satisfaction, but reinforces my belief that with hard work and dedication, anything is possible. I mean, come on, a runway photographer from Texas shooting house? I’ll go out on a limb here and say that there are not many house photographers at MBFW that are not based or from New York, London, Paris or Milan, the 4 major Fashion Week cities where most of your top runway photographers hail from. Big thanks to John Perez and Nenaji Agbolabori who assisted in shooting the show.

So once again, I’ve had access to what for most, is just a fantasy world. To work with such talented people like Christian Siriano and see his beautiful creations up close is truly amazing. Not only this but his incredible staff including my good friend Ewa. So here we are on my blog. Not only am I bringing you all the beautiful looks from the Spring/Summer 2014 collection, including behind-the-scenes footage, but the full show in HD so enjoy. To see all the killer collections from Christian, visit his website at www.christiansiriano.com.

What motivates me?

“What motivates me?”

A frequent question I get, so I’ll try to respond whilst in a contemplative mood. What drives me is passion. A true passion and love for whatever I’m doing. To constantly grow and hone my craft and hopefully be a inspiration for others, as so many have been for me. I constantly look around me and am inspired by so many talented people. That, and a competitive spirit I’ve had since my early youth to be the best at what I’m doing.

For me, a hunger for success keeps me focused and determined. To know and really believe, deep down inside that anything is possible and dreams can come true. I think everyone can relate to what I’m about to say in some way or another. But I can only explain it from a first person point of view, and from my past experiences. Once you’ve had a small taste of success, anything but success just won’t do. Things seem bland, coffee loses it’s taste, flowers lose their color and the smell of morning dew just isn’t the same. For me, I can close my eyes and recall some of my favorite memories. Whether winning a race as a driver and standing on the top step of the podium or being house photographer for a well known designer at New York Fashion Week. I want to reach this level with any project or endeavor I’m on.

In the end however, I think the biggest motivator for me is fear. A fear of not trying. A fear of regret that I didn’t go for it. A fear of failure not do to trying, but due to a lack of courage to try. To know that I have wonderful parents who have sacrificed everything for me to succeed. Parents who have instilled morals, values, and the work ethic required to succeed. Not only as a professional, but as a human. For me, these are the things that motivate me.

Proclamation Jewelry | 2013 Campaign

“Proclamation Jewelry…without a doubt, the most kickass jewelry I have ever seen!”

And that’s a pretty strong statement from someone who’s working in the fashion industry and with some of the top designers in the world. Earlier this year I was approached by the team from Proclamation Jewelry about shooting their 2013 campaign. A company launched by 3 friends, I was eager to find out more about them.

Right from the beginning, I was thoroughly impressed. And this is even before I saw the actual product. The Proclamation Team came to the meeting well prepared. When someone is represented by one of New York’s finest PR firms, you know they’re looking to put together the best team possible for their launch. I was honored to be considered as a possible photographer for their launch campaign. I can tell you honestly, that right from the start we had chemistry. We had so many things in common and one of them being the love for fast cars and motorsports. Of course having a prior professional racing experience didn’t hurt.

After a few meetings and conference calls, I was informed I would be shooting their campaign. Exciting news indeed and just happened that I was in New York shooting Fashion Week with my boy Dennis. Dennis of course would be part of the rockstar team shooting the PROC campaign.

About Proclamation Jewelry. As mentioned earlier, Proclamation Jewelry has the most kickass, awesome jewelry I’ve ever seen. Not only that, but when you actually lay your hands on a custom made piece, you know how much time and passion went into the creation of it. Not only do they have collections with names like Alpha, Brilliant & Mischievous but y0u can make any custom one-of-a-kind piece you can think of. So make sure to check out their website – www.proclamationjewelry.com and spread the word.

Yellow Magazine | May 2013

Privileged to have shot the cover and spread for the May 2013 issue of Yellow Magazine. Enjoy the photos below and view the online spread at http://www.yellowmags.com/2013_May_flipbook/. Now for some details about the shoot…

From the very beginning, I knew I absolutely wanted to have the best team possible for this shoot. I can’t say thank you enough to my amazing team who made this shoot possible. Big credit to Dennis and Dawn for really coming up with the creative direction for this shoot. Also stoked to present the Houston market to models Meghan Takahashi and Kristin Douglas who are extremely talented and just plain rock.

I decided to call the shoot “The Heist”. This photoshoot took place right before I embarked on some travels to South America and SE Asia for my ‘Romance of the Photograph’ book project. Shot at this pretty shady, crack motel in the Mexican part of town (well I’m Mexican and near my old stomping grounds), I can tell you this. We overcame a LOT of obstacles to make this shoot possible. From motel after motel turning us down, to part of the team having to be hospitalized and needing emergency surgery. But somehow the planets aligned, god looked down on us and made it all possible.

35mm Love | F3 burning thru some Tri-X & Ilford

A few of my favorite film shots from about 2 weeks back. Some from the Frohawk by Clendennen series with the lovely Hannah and a few faves I shot of my incredibly seductive friend and muse Marissa.

Through a forest and into the trees

Once upon a time, an incredibly beautiful girl with a sweet innocent look went for a walk. This path took her many places. From magazine covers, fashion campaigns to the big screen on Project Runway.  Her name…Alyssa. The blonde with green eyes and legs to die for was certainly headed in the right direction.

But one day while walking along this path, she came across a fork in the road. A decision was to be made now. Stay on her current path of sweetness and innocent or engage in a path of discover and mystery? The new path lead into a dark and mysterious forest. As fate would have it, curiosity and a sense for adventure took Alyssa from her commonly traveled path. As she stepped into the forest, it came alive. With branches moving and the wind howling, the forest announced loudly “Everything and all that steps foot here, belong to me!“.  Alyssa turned to gaze at the path she was leaving, but with a simply smile, she turned around and entered the forest.

For the forest had underestimated our model Alyssa. The wind and trees which were immune to her sweet and innocence quickly found themselves mesmerized by her other side. With one glance from her fierce green eyes and seductive poses, they were both now servants of her beauty.

Rocking it in Milano with Eulalia Mc from Boom Models

When I say Milano is a city of models I’m not kidding. Perhaps it was fate or perhaps it was the fact that I’m American and enjoy McDonald’s. Could also be that no matter where I am in the world, Europe, SE Asia, China…you can always find a McDonald’s. And why is it that I enjoy Mickey D’s? Well it’s not about the food (well sometimes)…you see, most McDonald’s have free wifi.

This brings us to Milano, Italy. I’m sitting down enjoying some nuggets and replying to a ton of emails. As fate would have it, an absolutely beautiful girl sits next to me. Being in Milano, I immediately knew this girl was a model. I continued with my lunch but before leaving engaged in some small chat. Sure enough, an Eastern European girl an working with Boom Models Agency. I showed her some of my work and asked her if she was interested in shooting and lucky for me she said yes. With that being said, I asked for a bit of information and contacted her booker at Boom. A few days later we met for a quick shoot so enjoy a few of the shots.

AdisonM by Felicia Stone

Earlier this year in Houston,  I met Felicia Stone. A new designer on the scene with her AdisonM line. At the time, we engaged in some small chat and I showed her a bit of my work on my iPad. She kindly complimented my work and told me she was working on her new collection. I gave her my card and told her she should look me up when she was ready to shoot it. Sure enough, later in the year she contacted me. We decided to meet for coffee to discuss her plans and photography needs.

I think a lot can be said over coffee. Right off the bat, Felicia and me clicked. I could see how passionate she was about fashion and where she wanted to go with her line. I’m pretty passionate about my craft as well so I related. After initial discussions we decided to meet again and plan a photoshoot for her new collection. I told her to bring a few samples with her to I could get an idea of what to shoot. To say I was impressed would be an understatement. The clothes she brought with her were sexy, chic, sophisticated and fun…kind of like Felicia :) 3 fabulous models rocked her wardrobe for both a catalog shoot and some fun editorial shots, enjoy.

151 Proof of Pure Hotness

How else can you describe the ravishing redhead we all know as Brenda Arens. Incredibly hot, super cool and she’s rocked it on America’s Next Top Model. To say I’ve been wanting to shoot or work with Brenda would be an understatement. I guess you could say Brenda was my white rhino…ever so elusive. Finally while having breakfast one morning, we decided we were going to put a concrete date in the calendar to shoot. Well, we had worked together in the past. Of course every time she walked the runway at Fashion Houston or some other fashion event I was shooting, and once on a campaign I shot for designer Jerri Moore.

The date we set to shoot was right after I arrived back from New York Fashion Week. I can honestly say, this was the first time EVER were Dennis (trusty hair genius) and myself were looking forward to getting back to Houston. I’m sure we mentioned it a few times while in New York. So, I finally had time to edit these photos we shot about two months back so enjoy. I won’t go into details about the morning shoot since I blogged about it before on a preview post here – http://jaymarroquin.com/blog/2012/highfashion/preview-brenda-arens/

I can say it’s been an extremely busy and exciting year for Jay Marroquin Photography. Not only all the things going on in 2012 but the amazing 2013 projects which will be announced in November. I can say however, that one of the things I enjoy most is collaborating with people I consider not only colleagues, but friends.

When Chloe asked me if I could shoot a few of her Fall 2012 pieces I was ecstatic. Well not only because I know Chloe, Sydney, Adam and the whole gang who totally rock…but because her wardrobe is freaking amazing! I’ve always loved shooting it and feel honored every time I can shoot one of her designs. For those of you who don’t know, I think I courted Chloe like 5 months straight to check out my work before we knew each other. So you see, perseverance does pay off! Of course the amazing hair was done by the one and only Dennis Clendennen of Dionysus Salon/AVEDA fame.

This past season at New York Fashion Week I had the opportunity to be house photographer for Christian Siriano. Having shot his past 5 seasons, I can tell you this is a huge honor for a Fashion/Runway photographer. I’ve always enjoyed his collections and look forward to his new creations every season. Not only this but his shows are always fun, exciting and can get downright crazy backstage.

Christian Siriano is not only an extremely talented designer, but one of the nicest people I’ve had the pleasure of working with. His team is also made up of a group of very talented individuals that work tirelessly behind the scenes. A special thanks to the beautiful Ewa for all she does.

Preview: The ever Radiant Brenda Arens

It’s Monday morning around 5am and I find myself driving to the beach. Riding shotgun is my boy Dennis, who I somehow convinced to wake up around 4am to join me on this shoot. Well to be honest, it didn’t take much to convince Dennis. I showed him a photo of our model Brenda who happened to be on America’s Next Top Model and he was like “I’m down!”. Oh and how about rocking hair since you’ll be coming along?

Now Brenda, who’s a smoking hot redhead was obviously stoked about the shoot. She was tagging us on Facebook before we even arrived in Galveston and asking us what we wanted from Mickey D’s at 5:30. Now this is a professional model! We met up near the seawall and had to take a ferry over to Bolivar Island for our shoot. It’s pretty much my favorite location for this type of stuff.

It was a pretty chilly morning and extremely windy on the beach which made shooting and setting up props a bit complicated. I wasn’t the only one with a few complications. Dennis showed up to my casa with his arm bandaged up like he was bit by a werewolf. Well pretty close…he broke up his dogs fighting and one decided he wasn’t ok with that. But still like a trooper, he showed up to rock hair like a rockstar hairstylist in the trenches.

Enjoy a few preview shots.

Color Me 1/15

A few weeks back I had the chance to shoot Page Parkes new talent Allison Assel. Tall, beautiful and a rocking personality…all the essentials in a great model. For this post I’m going to show something a bit different. Some photos I like to call “Color Me 1/15″.

A departure from my regular work, I wanted to blend color, hair and movement. A big thanks to Allison for helping me create these images.

Drummer, Neuroscientist and Model…also named by Cosmopolitan magazine as one of the hottest bachelors of 2012

Well let’s add Rock Star to the list…that’s exactly who Don Vaughn is. One of the coolest cat’s I’ve met, a talented musician, an overall cool guy and one of Houston’s most eligible bachelors. Having worked with Don on a artistic project about 2 years back, a Photoshoot for him was long overdue.

I reached out to the lovely Ericka from Page Parkes to see what male models she had available to shoot. My partner in crime Dennis Clendennen and myself had been wanting to shoot some guys in Houston since we really hadn’t in some time. I knew she would come thru and when I got the confirmation that I would be shooting Don I was stoked. First off, we go back a bit, secondly, I knew he would bring his A game to the shoot. Of course, this is exactly what we got and I’m happy to share a few of the photos from the shoot with you all. After the shoot all I remember is Dennis and myself saying “Damn, Don is funny as hell!”.

Enjoy…
